Modal Verbs in inglese: come usarli e non sbagliare

Oggi ho studiato i modal verbs, cioè quei verbi speciali inglesi che servono a esprimere abilità, possibilità, obbligo, consiglio, permesso o probabilità.

  • can / could
  • must
  • should
  • may / might
  • will / would
  • shall (meno comune)

📌 Regola base:

  • modal + verbo base (senza to)

Esempio:

  • I can speak English.
  • You must study more.

CAN / COULD

Uso

  • abilità: I can swim
  • permesso (informale): Can I go out?
  • possibilità: It can be difficult

Could si usa per:

  • abilità nel passato
  • richieste più educate
  • possibilità meno sicure

Esempi:

  • When I was young, I could run fast.
  • Could you help me?

MUST

Uso

  • obbligo forte: You must wear a helmet
  • deduzione logica: She must be tired

📌 Attenzione:

  • mustn’t = divieto, non mancanza di obbligo

Esempio:

  • You mustn’t smoke here.

SHOULD

Uso

  • consigli
  • opinioni personali
  • aspettative

Esempi:

  • You should study more.
  • He should be at home now.

È meno forte di must.

MAY / MIGHT

Uso

  • possibilità
  • permesso (formale)

Esempi:

  • It may rain today.
  • She might be late.

📌 Might indica una possibilità più debole rispetto a may.

WILL / WOULD come modali

  • will → decisioni immediate, promesse
  • would → richieste educate, situazioni ipotetiche

Esempi:

  • I will help you.
  • Would you like some coffee?

Forma negativa

La forma negativa si costruisce con modal + not.

  • cannot / can’t
  • must not / mustn’t
  • should not / shouldn’t
  • may not
  • might not

Esempio:

  • You shouldn’t worry.

Forma interrogativa

Per le domande si inverte il modal con il soggetto.

  • Can you help me?
  • Should I call him?
  • May I come in?

📌 Non si usa do/does/did con i modal verbs.

Errori comuni con i modal verbs

He can to speak English
He can speak English

Do you can help me?
Can you help me?

You mustn’t forget = you don’t have to
You don’t have to forget (assenza di obbligo)
